HELLO WORLD

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for visiting my blog page! Thought I should introduce myself… so I’m Georgia and I’m a qualified Sports Therapist, specialising in Sports Massage. I started on this journey when I was 16 years old when I was lucky enough to get work experience in an established clinic in my hometown of Coventry. It was then that my love for my job began, I had an awesome mentor who taught me in all aspects of the job and within a few months my massage skills had started to develop. I decided that this was the career for me, so I studied hard and got my place to study Sports Therapy at Coventry University; a three year full time degree. During this time I continued with my work experience one day a week; the perfect way to test out the skills and knowledge I was now being taught.

On completion of my degree and adding some very posh letters to my name, I was offered a full time position with the clinic that I had now been with for five years. This was the time that I really learnt my trade (similar to passing your driving test and then learning to drive!) Everything was great until my mentor, who had become a great friend, passed away. The rug was literally pulled from underneath me.

This meant that at the ripe old age of twenty two, that I had to either man up and take on the clinic, taking on a lease and being responsible or I could wimp out and get a desk job…! Well luckily, I chose the first, so for the past six years I have been part owner of a successful clinic, it wasn’t all plain sailing but I did it, I kept my promise to my mentor and I looked after his patients for him.

However, this year, I married my lovely husband and we decided to start a family together. All seemed a great idea until I was sick every day for three months… brilliant when self-employed! Anyway I digress….. things changed for me this year and I decided that this was the year to bite the bullet and go alone, que the birth of Revive Sports Massage! And just like that, here we are, now based in Allesley Village and still ready to help. Thank you to my patients for their immense support in making this move.

SPORTS MASSAGE… WHATS IT ALL ABOUT?

So you’ve probably all heard of sports massage…. But do you really know what it’s all about? How is it different to other types of massage? Does it hurt? Do I have to be sporty? Well here’s the low down…

Sports Massage helps to alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body soft tissues during physical activity, overexertion and/or overuse…this basically meaning we fix what exercise buggers up! It is fantastic for preventing those niggling injuries that so often get in the way of performance and achievement, whether one is an athlete, ardent keep-fitter or a once a week jogger.

You do not need to be the sporty type: anyone can benefit from sports massage, including people in physically demanding jobs and those not quite so obvious such as desk workers (occupational, emotional and postural stress may produce many similar characteristics to sports injuries). I, myself have sports massage to keep my migraines at bay, I find that preventing tension building up in my neck and shoulders really helps, its also great when migraine has struck for relieving symptoms.

Sports massage tends to be deeper and more intense; it incorporates a combination of techniques involving stretching, compression, friction, and trigger point response techniques similar to Acupressure and Shiatsu. Don’t let the word ‘intense’ freak you out…yes it can hurt a bit, in places, but you will not be screaming in pain, well not for the whole session anyway! The reason sports massage is so effective is that it is more intense than normal massage; we get deeper into the tissues and therefore bring about a bigger change. Sports massage, a bit of pain, for a lot of gain!

THE THREE MAIN MASSAGE BENEFITS

There are three areas where sports massage is used to benefit athletes:

Maintenance Massage

Maintenance massage involves having regular massage session. This programme can be used for concentrating on particular muscle groups to help the athlete maintain or improve range of motion and muscle flexibility. Maintenance massage is also useful for people who want a general rub down every month or so to keep tension at bay, prevention is always better than cure.

Event Massage

Pre-event and post-event massage therapies are tailored for distinct purposes. Pre-event treatment is used as a supplement to an athlete’s warm-up to enhance circulation and reduce excess muscle and mental tension prior to competition. It is tailored to the needs of the athlete and his/her event and can be relaxing or stimulating as appropriate. Post-event massage, on the other hand, is geared towards reducing the muscle spasms and metabolic build-up that occur with rigorous exercise. Various sports massage techniques enhance the body’s own recovery process improving the athlete’s ability to return to training and competition, and reducing the risk of injury. It also stops those nasty ‘next day’ aches and pains.

Rehabilitation

Even with preventative maintenance, muscles do cramp, tear, bruise, and ache. Sports massage speeds up healing and reduces the discomfort during the rehabilitation process. Soft tissue techniques are effective in the management of both acute and chronic injuries, so it really is all round useful. The use of trigger point techniques reduces the spasm and pain that occur both in the injured and “compensation” muscles; two for the price of one! All this helps with maintaining a full pain-free range of motion, getting you back on your feet in no time.
